Heavy Metal Photography Book Release

May 21, 2019

Welcome back to Metal Librarian! Here, with an update on an upcoming metal book release.

Everyone enjoys a coffee-table type book about something they are really passionate about. Look no further metalheads, Defenders of the Faith: The Heavy Metal Photography of Peter Beste is a new book coming out September 10, 2019. You should ask your public library to purchase this piece of metal history, as it does chronicle an important era and aspects of metal music subculture that most people only get to scratch the surface of.

From amazon: The religious ferocity of Heavy Metal fandom is one of the most fervent in the history of subculture. The display of this fervor has been channeled and distilled throughout time into one sacred object: the battle vest. Often referred to as the Kutten (German for monk’s robe), the battle vest serves a multitude of purposes: as a musical CV, a badge of authenticity, a creative practice of identity, and a fashion statement. Defenders of the Faith documents the timeless and universal concept of fandom through the elevation of the battle vests, revering them beyond the sweaty bodies they adorn and the pits they live in, to the status of religious artifact.

Photographer Peter Beste has been documenting subcultures for over 20 years. His first book True Norwegian Black Metal (Vice Books) was a portrayal of the extreme end of the genre and the stunning photos contained within translated far beyond the niche fans of the music, selling tens of thousands of copies. His critically acclaimed follow up book Houston Rap showed his breadth as a photographer and Juxtapoz called it “An astonishing and important insight into a great American cultural narrative.” Defenders of the Faith is Beste’s fourth book that has been edited by Boo-Hooray\'s Johan Kugelburg and his photographic treatment of traditional heavy metal culture and dress code is similarly striking. Metal fans, fashion enthusiasts, and subculture geeks will come to the book naturally but the images have a gravity of humanity that speaks to universal expression of passion and devotion and make the book instantly relatable. New Venom Box Set!

May 16, 2019

Venom is one of the bands most notably credited in creating the first forms of thrash, extreme, and ultimately black metal. The band did not achieve elite-level status in terms of album sales yet, they do have an almost cult-like following, due to their longevity and ability to stay true to their sound. On May 31st, they are releasing a deluxe vinyl box set titled, \"In Nomine Satanas\", celebrating VENOM\'s 40th anniversary and features the original Neat Records recordings from their 1981 debut \"Welcome To Hell\" to \"Eine Kleine Nachtmusik\", the live recording of their mythical appearance at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1985. All of the albums are remastered from the original tapes with embossed covers, posters and inserts like their original first editions. They\'re all now on color-configured vinyl too. The set also includes a 12-inch book detailing the history of the band featuring new interviews with all three members, written by respected journalist Dom Lawson (taken from, accessed 5/16/2019). Owning a piece of metal history such as this that many metal fans should really consider.

Here are what the box contains for the recordings and why I feel it\'s important in metal music history:

4LPs and 2 x 2LP

\"Welcome To Hell\"

(Remastered from original tapes on splatter vinyl. Comes with reproductions of the original poster and insert with an embossed cover.)

Sometimes this will come in a list format, other times, an entire post will be about one album, an EP or even a single release. Feel free to message me at Librarytech87@gmail, if you know of any album releases coming out. Public Libraries in general do collect musical albums as part of the collections they offer. Would be great to see more people request their local public library to purchase metal music albums. They want to hear from you. Either notify your local library via email, phone on an in-person visit. The Librarians are happy you took the effort to communicate to them what you are looking for.

This is the second post of many. Cheers, and horns up my fellow metalheads!

New Book Release

April 21, 2019

Welcome to the Metal Librarian website. This website is dedicated to all things metal music, and libraries! We are going to go ahead and jump right in, and present to you a new book coming out on July 16, 2019.

More Life with Deth by David Ellefson.

  • Paperback: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Jawbone Press (July 16, 2019)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1911036513
  • ISBN-13: 978-1911036517

For those who do not know, David Ellefson is one of the founding members of the Grammy-winning thrash metal band, Megadeth. Megadeth have gone on to sell thirty million albums worldwide for over thirty-five years now. I'm personally a pretty big fan of Megadeth myself over the years, and excited to read this, continuation of his 2013 memoir titled, My Life With Deth. In this publication, Ellefson continues to chronicle his time in Megadeth from when he actually left the band in the 2000s, and his return in 2010 and the subsequent tours and albums the band has done in the last decade.

One of the interesting tidbits contained within the book is information regarding the "Big 4" concerts that took place a few years ago. For those who do not know, the "Big 4" are a group of influential thrash metal bands from the early 1980's, including Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer. These bands have pretty much influenced most metal bands since, and put thrash metal on the map. I've always respected Ellefson's playing in Megadeth, with his distinct pic-struck bass lines, that really beef up the Mustaine-led riffs.

This sounds like an interesting book to read that's coming out over the summer, and I recommend that you ask your local public library to purchase it for their collection! Public libraries like to receive feedback on specific titles that are coming out soon. Again, this is the first post of many here on Metal Librarian, so stay tuned, and horns up!
